ALK Technologies Announces IDSC ExpertFuel Integration with CoPilot Truck

Brings fuel-optimized route automation and fuel savings to fleets

Nashville, Tennessee – September 22 – ALK Technologies, a global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software and TMW Systems®, a leading provider of enterprise transportation management software, today announced that ExpertFuel® software solutiion from TMW Systems is now seamlessly integrated with ALK’s CoPilot® Truck™ in-cab navigation solution via TMWSuite® and TotalMail® software systems.  The integration allows organizations to reduce a fleet’s fuel expenses and out-of-route mileage by automating route planning and ensuring route compliance.

IDSC ExpertFuel is an industry-leading fuel purchase optimization system designed specifically for the irregular route truckload carrier.  CoPilot Truck’s in-cab navigation solution provides reliable, street level ALK Map Data™ of North America enhanced with industry standard PC*MILER® truck-specific attributes.

Utilizing ALK’s RouteSync® capability that links the back office to the cab, ExpertFuel accepts detailed customer coordinates and creates a turn-by-turn route plan that can be sent directly to the CoPilot Truck application running on a mobile comm device in the cab.  The driver receives spoken, turn-by-turn directions to all assigned customer and fueling stops, making it possible for a driver to easily and safely follow the dispatched fuel optimization plan.  To ensure fleet-wide route compliance, CoPilot Truck provides management the opportunity to control how the navigation reacts when a driver goes off-route.

“CoPilot Truck and ExpertFuel are a perfect combination for fleets focused heavily on fuel savings, and in today’s market who isn’t?” said Dan Popkin, senior vice president of enterprise solutions at ALK Technologies.  “Generating a cost-effective route plan is the first step; providing the driver the tools to follow it is the crucial second step that we’re pleased to deliver to our joint customers.”  Continue reading

New Tech Makes Weigh Station Bypass Easier

CoPilot Truck users know that cell phones and smart phones are no longer just for staying connected, but are helping truckers reach new heights in productivity.

And now thanks to technology developed by Drivewyze, smartphones and other in-truck devices can now use existing cellular networks to transmit bypass requests at weigh stations. This means that commercial truck drivers now have a choice in bypass programs, beyond the traditional transponder based programs.2 miles

Drivewyze is currently offering its bypass program at 333 fixed weigh stations and mobile inspection sites in 25 states, and works on a driver’s existing smartphone, tablet, or other in-cab device. The service also provides a free “heads-up” alert when approaching other weigh stations across the United States.

How One Owner Operator Saved $8,800 in just 12 months
Mike Shatney, an owner operator since 2006, has witnessed what Drivewyze can offer. Shatney, who hauls milk throughout the eastern seaboard, had a pull-in rate of just 3 percent over the last year – 1,053 bypass opportunities with 1,021 granted – thanks to Drivewyze

On an average, Shatney has had about 60 bypasses a month, and saved nearly $8,800 in time and fuel over the last 12 months. That works out to 85 hours in time savings, and 408 gallons of fuel saved. Despite those numbers, Shatney said the reward in using mobile-based inspection bypass is more than just the fuel he’s saving.

“For me, the reward comes from getting good loads, and the ability to bypass while others are stuck waiting to go through weigh stations,” he added. “It saves me anywhere from 20 minutes to half hour at each weigh station.”

Achieving True Route Compliance

Looking to achieve true route compliance?  We can help.

Companies today want their vehicles to drive specific pre-planned routes for billing and operational reasons, but once a driver is behind the wheel that’s not always the case.  That’s why we’ve developed RouteSync, our unique capability that synchronizes the planned route in the back office with the navigated route in the cab.  With RouteSync, dispatchers can send PC*MILER optimized routes directly to drivers to follow through CoPilot Truck in-cab navigation.

Once the route is driven, you can take it a step further and use our CoPilot FleetPortal tool to visualize routes and generate fleet-wide reports on vehicle compliance to planned routes.  An extremely useful tool for identifying driver coaching opportunities that can lead to reduced fuel usage.

The 2014 ALK Transportation Technology Summit – 10th Anniversary!

The 2014 ALK Transportation Technology Summit was truly special this year, as it marked our 10th anniversary of the event.

Although our event remained in Princeton, NJ this year, we switched up both our Golf Outing venue, moving to Springdale Golf Club, as well as our Dinner Reception venue, relocating back to the Nassau Inn, the location of our very first Summit in 2005!  Both venues were a huge success.

In addition to the events, we hope you enjoyed all of the networking opportunities, and general sessions. It was an honor to have former Secretary of transportation Ray Lahood onboard to share his current views.  Another agenda highlight was the CIO panel discussion focused on critical industry issues and best practices.   Each year we try to improve our content so that attendees leave with actionable information to help streamline their business’ operational efficiencies.

CoPilot Cares: Distracted Driving Awareness

Driver safety has always been and remains a priority for ALK.  Our CoPilot and CoPilot Truck apps for mobile devices were specifically designed with driver safety in mind.  We hope you take advantage of all these distraction-reducing features not only this month but all year round.  Please join us in in urging drivers to recognize Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

At any given moment in America, 660 thousand people are using a cell phone or electronic device while driving. This is why the National Safety Council and others have dedicated April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

 Truck-Legal Navigation & Routing

Consumer-based car navigation apps are simply not an option for truck drivers. They need a truck-specific navigation app, such as CoPilot Truck, that routes trucks based on their vehicle size and load type. This not only keeps truck drivers safe, but makes the road safer for all other passenger vehicles as well.
