New ALK Maps Overlays Increase Data Insights and Improve Decision Making

Visualization provides better understanding of asset utilization, safety and service

Princeton, N.J. – November 30, 2015 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today announced that ALK® Maps, a web-based, customizable interactive mapping platform providing high-quality visualization, has added new map overlays that provide superior route planning and data insight for increased operational efficiency.

“ALK Maps continues to expand its product offerings to meet customer demand for map visualization across all industries,” said Rishi Mehra, director of web products at ALK Technologies. “Our new capabilities provide tools not only for enhanced transportation route planning, but also for improved strategic decision making.  By transforming operational data from numbers to visual, actionable intelligence, ALK Maps can enable businesses to improve their efficiency, productivity and decision making.”

Enhancing its already robust set of features and functionality, ALK Maps’ new visualization overlays include:

Traffic Incidents

View traffic occurrences, including accidents, roadwork and weather-related events, identified by an icon directly on the map. The new traffic incident layer provides visibility of potential impacts or delays for current or future routes to improve asset utilization and operational efficiency with more accurate ETAs and re-routing of affected drivers.

Drive Time Polygons

Generate and display polygon boundaries showing how far a driver can travel within an indicated length of time (maximum 120 minutes) from a specified origin or location. Drive time capacity insight within a given geographic area allows companies to ensure appointment times and service commitments are met. It also can increase mobile workforce efficiency by providing data that allows companies to complete more jobs per day or locate truck stops and maintenance facilities in a specific area.

Elevation Routing

Elevation routing helps to ensure pressure-sensitive goods are delivered safely, and prevents cargo damage by avoiding roads above a certain elevation. Fewer gradient road changes may also result in fuel efficiency and lessen environmental impact with reduced gas emissions.

Boundary Polygons

ALK Technologies Updates CoPilot Truck In-Cab Navigation with Enhanced Routing Profile Management

Improves truck routing profiles and incorporates back office remote management to enhance driver safety and enable compliance

Philadelphia, PA – October 19, 2015 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today announced the latest release of its CoPilot Truck in-cab navigation solution. With improvements to the truck-specific routing profile feature, the update makes it easier for fleets to create and follow optimized routes based on vehicle size and load, to enable safety and compliance on the road.  It also provides fleet managers with remote configuration capabilities for tighter control over the routes drivers follow and eliminates the need for associated driver interaction.

“We see the connection between the back office and the cab as a key factor in a fleet’s successful deployment of in-cab navigation, and this CoPilot Truck release further supports our objective to align the two in a meaningful way for fleets,” said Dan Titus, vice president, business development –enterprise solutions, ALK Technologies.  “With CoPilot Truck’s Web-based back office tool, CoPilot FleetPortal, we’re providing fleet managers with greater management of the routes executed in-cab so that drivers can stay focused on the road and avoid the risk of costly fines or collisions, which would otherwise negatively impact their CSA scores.  We’ve also come a long way to address the operational requirements of fleets that support multiple vehicle sizes and loads.”

With this update, CoPilot Truck introduces a new set of default vehicle types that better fit the routing needs of Light Duty, Medium Duty, or Heavy Duty trucks.  If multiple profiles are created and saved, CoPilot Truck will alert a driver to select the correct profile for that particular trip, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.  CoPilot Truck will now also alert drivers if they enter a custom vehicle dimension that may require a permit to help avoid errors and ensure compliance when creating routing profiles.  The software update also debuts a new darker in-cab user interface on the display to further reduce driver distraction and minimize ambient screen glare during the day or night.

New remote configuration settings in CoPilot FleetPortal allow driver managers to specify and send Out-of-Route thresholds by vehicle group, as well as to update custom routing profiles, PC*MILER® Avoids/Favors*, road closures, and custom POI sets used by CoPilot Truck in-cab.  Synchronization of this information can be set to occur as frequently as every 30 minutes to once every 24 hours.   The option to restrict access to routing profiles is also now available, which gives drivers less to worry about and enables fleets to ensure that the correct routing profiles will be used to generate optimal routes as well as to reduce the risk of driving on truck restricted roads.

The CoPilot Truck update also enables small fleets and owner operators using ALK’s back office PC*MILER routing, mileage and mapping software to send planned routes created in PC*MILER directly to ALK’s CoPilot Truck Smartphone and Tablet app for compliant route execution.  The CoPilot Truck app is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows XP and Windows Mobile platforms.

CoPilot Truck, as well as the full suite of ALK Transportation Solutions, will be showcased in Booth #718 at the American Transportation Association Management Conference & Exhibition in Philadelphia.

ALK Transportation Solutions Enrich Cargas Energy’s New Integrated Web-based Mapping and Routing Software

Applications Deliver Route Planning, Navigation and Compliance Tools for More Efficient Operations

Princeton, N.J. – July 16, 2015 – ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today announced that Cargas Systems, a software and consulting company specializing in cloud accounting, enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management software and custom application development, has integrated ALK’s comprehensive suite of transportation solutions with Cargas’ Energy software. The integrated solution provides industry-specific route dispatch, navigation and map visualization for fuel delivery and HVAC service companies.

In order to provide a long-term solution that specialized in routing and navigation capabilities which incorporated hazardous materials restrictions for its Route Builder and Real-Time Mobile applications, Cargas integrated:

  • ALK® Maps with PC*MILER® Web Services for high-quality map and route visualization with industry-specific commercial routing and restrictions;
  • CoPilot® TruckTM for safe, accurate, load-specific navigation; and
  • RouteSync® for sending planned routes in the back office directly to CoPilot Truck in the vehicle for route compliance.

“For years, we sought an integrated solution for cohesive, web-based routing and mapping tools,” said Saul Cohen, Product Specialist for Cargas Systems. “Using MapPoint and Bing Maps separately for those functions did not allow for communication or collaboration between the products. We looked at a number of different products over time but it was obvious that ALK Maps was the best company and solution fit. We are very familiar with developing web applications and leveraging the Java Script API allowed us to rewrite our mapping and routing software within a few months and make it immediately available as Service Pack updates to all our customers.”

A dynamic route and asset visualization platform, ALK Maps is the foundation on which Cargas’ delivery routing solution, Route Builder, was developed. The integration allows customers access to industry-specific commercial and hazardous materials routing vital to their business needs, as well as real-time traffic data for enhanced planning.  As a web-based platform, ALK Maps allows users to build routes directly within the Cargas software instead of exporting planned routes to a second, locally installed application. Additionally, Cargas’ customized integration includes the ability to re-route stops using drag-and-drop functionality, view delivery and stop information directly on the map and create optimized routes by simply plotting stops. In addition, ALK Maps provides the map visualization for real-time vehicle and asset tracking, such as viewing driver locations, inventory status and delivery progress. Instant modifications to a route plan due to delays or a newly added stop can be accommodated with ease. A demonstration of the newly developed Route Builder can be viewed at: http://cargasenergy.com/route-builder/.

“With the streamlined approach and functionality of Route Builder, we anticipate time savings of 2 hours per day in productivity gains for our drivers. Instead of manually sifting through tickets and optimizing their own routes, our drivers are doing what they do best: delivering product,” said Steve Fetter, operations manager at Sheller Oil, a Cargas Energy customer.

Additionally, Cargas’ Real-Time Mobile applications will now feature CoPilot Truck, providing drivers and technicians truck-specific, turn-by-turn navigation based on their vehicle’s dimensions and load. Drivers no longer have to follow a list of static directions. With CoPilot Truck, they have reliable navigation with clear voice-guidance and fast, automatic re-route calculation if a driver misses a turn or goes off route.

To further enhance operational productivity, Cargas also integrated its software and mobile applications with ALK’s RouteSync capability. This allows pre-planned or modified routes from ALK Maps to be sent directly to the driver’s mobile device running CoPilot Truck. Creating true route compliance, this crucial link not only delivers operational consistency between navigation and dispatch, but also reduces non-revenue mileage by minimizing the variance between actual and planned routes.

“Leveraging the same source of commercial data that exists in both ALK Maps and CoPilot Truck is essential when producing applications that streamline business operations and efficiencies,” said Dan Popkin, senior vice president, enterprise solutions, ALK Technologies.  “Our suite of solutions provides the consistency between planned and driven routes that is vital to business success.”

ALK Technologies Introduces PC*MILER 29 with HOS Manager

Brings Hours of Service compliance for enhanced route planning and improved asset utilization

Princeton, N.J. – June 30, 2015ALK Technologies, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, today introduced the latest version of its PC*MILER® truck routing, mileage and mapping software. PC*MILER 29 allows for greater comprehensive planning in the back office and provides new tools to enable transportation companies to minimize overall operational costs, such as a new HOS Manager that factors Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours of Service (HOS) regulated breaks directly into the route.

With PC*MILER’s HOS Manager, mandatory HOS breaks are incorporated during trip planning, allowing transportation companies to clearly understand actual travel times and distance traveled. Access to this more accurate mileage information can significantly improve asset utilization as fleets can more efficiently manage their assets and ensure they’re maximizing revenue per day. When planning a route, dispatchers can easily identify if a driver will be in violation as well as identify an appropriate stop to break if needed. They can even view a list of amenities located at a stop to assist in choosing the best break location.

“Our customers can realize significant benefits from having HOS requirements built directly into their routes,” said Kara Jo O’Neil, senior product manager at ALK. “Keeping drivers HOS compliant is an ongoing national issue and we’re pleased to continue to evolve our solution to address the needs of the industry. PC*MILER 29’s improved overall functionality is equipped with the tools to further facilitate comprehensive planning that directly impacts the back office and the drivers on the road.”

PC*MILER 29 also includes the ability to search and display Points of Interest (POIs) along a route, guiding the driver to a preferred and designated stop. In addition, dispatchers can now choose the most cost-effective fuel stop when planning a route using integrated, nationwide live fuel pricing from Pilot and Flying J.  Fuel prices are updated every 30 minutes, allowing dispatchers to make quick and easy changes within the route plan, providing more efficient and cost-effective routing overall.

PC*MILER 29 users will have the choice of avoiding ferries as well as roads above a specified elevation through the Ferry and Elevation Discouraged routing options. Elevation Discouraged Routing permits users to set customized limits on road elevations during route planning, enabling them to protect precious goods that could potentially damage a shipment. A revamped Via Points Manager, updated hazardous roadway restrictions as well as database enhancements and routing improvements in North America are also included within the release.

PC*MILER runs on Microsoft Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms as well as IBM AS/400 (iSeries) and mainframe computers. PC*MILER is also available as a Web-based application. It can also be seamlessly integrated with leading transportation and supply chain management systems.

Transport America Implements ALK Maps Weather Alerts

Automated weather warnings save Fleet Leaders time, keep drivers and cargo safe and improve fleet utilization

Princeton, N.J. – March 31, 2015 – ALK, a Trimble Company and global leader in GeoLogistics® solutions and navigation software, announced that Transport America has implemented its ALK® Maps platform with the Weather Alerts module. This implementation fully automates Transport America’s process for curating potentially hazardous weather events, alerting Fleet Leaders and drivers of weather alerts and identifying future undispatched loads and projected routes that might also be affected. As a result, Transport America will be able to produce more accurate weather alerts that can empower its team to make educated decisions to help keep drivers and freight safe and optimize fleet utilization in the face of weather disruptions.

“After last year’s harsh winter, we were looking for a tool to keep our trucks safer and moving in bad weather,” said Tom Benusa, CIO of Transport America. “We were stuck manually and intermittently reviewing weather information and eyeballing what trucks it might affect. ALK was able to provide us the tools to build exactly what we needed.  Weather information is now systematically automated to meet our three goals: to keep drivers safe, to keep their cargo safe and to ensure that our assets are optimally utilized. We’ve been very impressed with the functionality so far and know that we’ll be able to expand our capabilities as we continue to use the platform.”

ALK Maps Weather Alerts pulls in severe weather alert information directly from the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Transport America has integrated this module with its internal alert system. The system runs across Transport America’s entire fleet every 20 minutes and offers Fleet Leaders the real-time data they need to identify new weather related issues for their specific trucks. This information enables them to confidently make critical safety decisions based on where their drivers are and where they are headed. Transport America’s Customer Service team is provided weather-related insight for their projected routes up to three times daily so they can easily assess the impact and decide if a load should be re-routed or held.

“Fleet Leaders can now proactively contact their drivers and make sure they are aware of the weather situation and ensure their safe passage,” continued Mr. Benusa. “In addition, we can look further ahead into future routes and project which might be affected by weather. We now have the information far enough in advance to make the decision to re-route ahead of storms or, if needed, reach out to clients to schedule earlier or later pickups and deliveries. It’s a significant enhancement to our customer service as well our fleet logistics.”

“The Transport America team has pioneered a new approach to solving an ever-present challenge the entire transportation industry faces, and we’re pleased the Weather Alerts module has enabled them to so,” said Dan Popkin, senior vice president of enterprise solutions at ALK. “We’re looking forward to continued collaboration and innovation with Transport America as they utilize the ALK Maps platform to drive their fleet’s efficiency.”

Weather Alerts is available to purchase as an additional module for the ALK Maps or PC*MILER Web Services platforms.
