Throughout the year ALK’s product, design and development teams look into ways to improve, streamline and fine-tune the usability of PC*MILER’s features. In Version 28, this year’s annual release, significant usability improvements were made to the importing of custom places. PC*MILER gives users the capability to assign their own names to locations in the database. Once a custom place is created, users can enter it as a stop on a route. In PC*MILER 28, users now have the flexibility to assign a custom place to their own defined category name. We expect this feature to help users better organize their custom places and make it easier to identify them on the PC*MILER RouteMap.
We also kept usability in mind when we implemented the new Route Profiles Manager, which provides the ability to create and save custom routing profiles. The new tool enables users to create and save groups of routing options under a name of their choosing. The profile can then be selected each time a route is run that requires the route options in that profile. Using this feature will increase efficiency when working with fleets that have multiple modes of transport, all with different routing needs.
ALK continues to search for innovative ways to help our customers with their routing, mileage and mapping needs. After 15 years here at ALK, I’ve had the opportunity to work with both the PC*MILER routing and map data and its features and functionality within the software to help ensure the value that PC*MILER brings to the process of solving the complex challenges facing the transportation industry today.

Looking to achieve true route compliance? We can help.
Companies today want their vehicles to drive specific pre-planned routes for billing and operational reasons, but once a driver is behind the wheel that’s not always the case. That’s why we’ve developed RouteSync, our unique capability that synchronizes the planned route in the back office with the navigated route in the cab. With RouteSync, dispatchers can send PC*MILER optimized routes directly to drivers to follow through CoPilot Truck in-cab navigation.
Once the route is driven, you can take it a step further and use our CoPilot FleetPortal tool to visualize routes and generate fleet-wide reports on vehicle compliance to planned routes. An extremely useful tool for identifying driver coaching opportunities that can lead to reduced fuel usage.

The 2014 ALK Transportation Technology Summit was truly special this year, as it marked our 10th anniversary of the event.
Although our event remained in Princeton, NJ this year, we switched up both our Golf Outing venue, moving to Springdale Golf Club, as well as our Dinner Reception venue, relocating back to the Nassau Inn, the location of our very first Summit in 2005! Both venues were a huge success.
In addition to the events, we hope you enjoyed all of the networking opportunities, and general sessions. It was an honor to have former Secretary of transportation Ray Lahood onboard to share his current views. Another agenda highlight was the CIO panel discussion focused on critical industry issues and best practices. Each year we try to improve our content so that attendees leave with actionable information to help streamline their business’ operational efficiencies.
We encourage you to take our quick, 5 minute, post-event survey. Your feedback allows us to better understand what we can do to make this event more successful for you. Knowing what you want helps us plan for future years.
For a recap of the event and all of our presentations, view our Overview Summary.
PDF versions of the presentations can be found on our website at http://www.alktechsummit.com/presentations.html. Video versions of the presentations will be available in mid-June.
Thank you to everyone who attended our 2014 Summit – details about our 2015 event will be released in late summer.

Includes New Hours-of-Service Compliance Tools for More Precise Arrival and Delivery Time Estimates
Princeton, New Jersey — June 25, 2013 — ALK Technologies, a global leader in GeoLogistics™ and navigation software, today released the latest version of its PC*MILER truck routing, mileage and mapping software. PC*MILER 27 features and enhancements include a completely redesigned graphical user interface for maximum efficiency and Hours-of-Service compliance tools for more precise arrival and delivery time estimates.
“PC*MILER 27 is a milestone for ALK. We’re thrilled to unveil this robust yet easy to use interface with an all new look and feel,” said Mike Bodden, Senior Vice President of Technology, ALK Technologies. “The new UI provides an improved user experience with easier product navigation, resulting in increased productivity.”
The new PCMILER 27 graphical user interface reflects recent trends in software design that result in more intuitive navigation of the product’s vast feature set. The user interface features a ribbon style design with newly crafted descriptive icons, a more accessible layout for smoother transition between tasks, and windows that can be floated outside the PC*MILER application to better accommodate workspace needs.
PC*MILER 27 features new Hours-of-Service compliance tools to help ensure that routes and ETAs will accurately reflect driver’s available hours. The HOS compliance tools increase the precision of arrival and delivery time estimates and help dispatchers and drivers comply with HOS government regulations. Based on remaining hours, PC*MILER calculates when a driver needs to break, and indicates the designated breaks in the detailed driving directions report, automatically updating on-duty hours. Through the PC*MILER|Connect interface tool, fleets are able to import or export the drivers’ remaining hours associated with specific routes. With the pending new regulations, this is crucial to managing driver compliance and CSA safety scores.
RouteSync is a powerful capability that ensures operational consistency between dispatched routes and actual routes, delivering the guidance to drive the miles that are being billed. With RouteSync, routes and preferences are sent from PC*MILER in the back office directly to the latest version of ALK’s CoPilot Truck navigation software in the cab. In addition to maintaining route compliance, RouteSync reduces non-revenue mileage, improves load profitability and increases driver satisfaction.
ALK continues to be the leading provider of truck-specific routing and tolls data. Enhanced routing, map data and address matching are a major part of each annual PC*MILER release. As part of ALK’s ongoing effort to track nationwide toll costs in the U.S. and Canada, PC*MILER|Tolls 27 includes four new toll discount programs.
The comprehensive suite of PC*MILER 27 integration tools has also been updated and enhanced. PC*MILER interfaces with all leading transportation, logistics and fleet management systems. These products include PC*MILER|Connect, PC*MILER|TCP/IP, PC*MILER|Mapping, PC*MILER|Spreadsheets, PC*MILER|BatchPro and Multi-Version Switch.
PC*MILER runs on Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and Linux platforms, as well as IBM AS/400 (iSeries) and mainframe computers. PC*MILER is also available as a web-based application. For more information, visit:www.pcmiler.com.

Completely Redesigned User Interface
As a seasoned ALK veteran for over twenty years, I am extremely proud to be part of the latest makeover of PC*MILER. Not only because of the awesome new features and enhancements included but also because of the winning team work that went into it to make it our best release yet.
Because of the importance of this release, we allocated a 20% increase in staff resources for this project. There was a significant effort, along with a new organizational game plan and emphasis on improved communication, collaboration and productivity.
For version 27 we decided it was time for a facelift. ALK has an in-house, technically oriented Design team that makes our CoPilot product line look really professional so when we decided to update PC*MILER’s interface we took the opportunity to get Design involved. Using the latest Microsoft tools our Design team collaborated closely with our developers to create a brand new look that I think you will like.
At the end of the day, tools are only tools and extraordinary team work was needed to bring this latest version to life. The Project and Product Management teams’ ongoing collaboration and dedication shows in the new product features and enhancements including a completely redesigned user interface with an all new look that encompasses newly crafted descriptive icons. This new UI provides a more accessible layout for smoother transition between tasks, and windows that can be floated outside the PC*MILER application to better accommodate workspace needs. We built in the ability to update the entire map dataset within the application, as well as the option to switch a map data region to match your business needs.
The collaborative team effort involved the following ALK groups: Product and Project Management, Development, Design, Technical Support and Documentation, GIS, and QA.
A huge shout-out to all. Way to hit it out of the park!
